Kalgoorlie Courthouse

The multi-million dollar transformation of Kalgoorlie's heritage-listed Government office building and former Post Office and Wardens Court into a contemporary courthouse was completed in 2013.

The Courthouse was officially opened on 22 November 2013 and operations commenced on 2 December 2013.

The investment in the courthouse has the additional benefit of restoring and preserving this historic landmark in the Goldfields that can be appreciated by future generations.

The important contribution of the community reference group in representing local interests on the redevelopment of the courthouse resulted in some of the most advanced facilities in WA.

By working together, the Government and the local community have been able to create a magnificent civic amenity that will provide residents with high quality and accessible justice services.

The $41.7 million facility is a four-courtroom complex, with provision to expand to five courts when required. It has three magistrates' courtrooms and one jury courtroom. A flexible design allows for the addition of a fifth courtroom to meet the future needs of the community.

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder community made a significant contribution to the design and redevelopment of the iconic landmark.

A Community Reference Group established in 2007 represented the diversity of the Goldfields-Esperance region and worked closely with the Department of the Attorney General to assist in ensuring the design of the courthouse reflected local cultures. Indicative of this is the emphasis on the indoor-outdoor connection captured visually and physically with the tilt-up glass doors which border the entire length of the public gallery.

The incorporation of landscaped outdoor waiting areas provide space for interactions and alternative paths of access for the variety of court clients. Aboriginal art is a highlight and the ochre interior colour scheme reflects the surrounding landscape.
